The San Gabriel Valley stretches across more than 200 square miles and contains 31 incorporated cities along with several unincorporated communities. It is one of the principal valleys of Southern California, and its transformation from agricultural land into an integrated urban region unfolded over the early and middle decades of the 20th century. Today it is nearly entirely urbanized and represents about one-fifth of Los Angeles County's total population.

The valley's character is defined by its ethnic diversity. It is home to the largest concentration of East Asian American communities in the United States and counts hundreds of thousands of residents from Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. This diversity extends across income levels, ages and family structures: renters and homeowners, young professionals and retirees, single households and extended families, making the San Gabriel Valley a complex tapestry of communities sharing physical proximity and regional identity.

A valley of that size and complexity requires planning across many dimensions: schools and transit, water systems and disaster response, economic development and social services. Families here also plan for their own futures in much the same way.
