How much life insurance do you need?

A calculator with step-by-step guidance: income years, debts, education, and existing coverage.

Add up what you'd want income replacement to cover, then subtract existing resources. Not exact—term is bought in $5,000 increments, and the aim is a number that protects your family through the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = income × years + debts + education − what's already in place, rounded to $5,000. This is a starting point, never advice.

Why those inputs

Income years. Ten to twenty years replaces income through most families' critical period; pick based on how long dependents need support. Temple City families with young kids often pick the longer term because costs for care, housing and school cluster in the same span.

Debts. Mortgage is most families' biggest debt. Enough coverage to eliminate it leaves survivors free to decide on housing without financial pressure.

Education. A modest per-child allowance in current dollars. Including it now beats adding another policy later.

What's in place. Liquid savings and employer group coverage both count. Group coverage often ends with employment, so many people count only a portion.

Once you have a target amount, use the quote tool to see what that covers across 10- to 30-year terms with each carrier. Buying extra coverage is common because cost per thousand drops significantly at younger ages.
